Prelude

This is not a game, it's a tiny isle floating in the ether. It's inspired by Kawika Guillermo's book Of Floating Isles and created by Adri M. as a way to reflect on it. Concept, mechanics and other ideas refer directly to the book. At any time, you can press R to see them for the current context. Try to find all four!

You can also press X at any time to restart the game.

The tiny floating ile concept was directly taken from page 15: "Games might appear as isolated islands from afar, but they are less like islands of utopian literature and more like literature's "isles": imaginary, mist-covered lands that invoke myth, legend, and imagination, as well as fear, violence, and power." These ideas permeate the whole design of this tiny floating isle.

  • The name "Stories in Whispers" is directly inspired by page 34: "'IT'S THREE IN THE MORNING! WE HAVE TO WORK TOMORROW!' After a minute of silence, we would continue our stories in whispers."

  • The idea of a poetry building game was inspired by pages 14 and 15 and how they compare games to poetry: "Games, in contrast, are the poetry of the digital age. They offer emotion, stimulation, and art, and they confront us with the realities of our world." and: "Like poetry, games claim to have no essence of truth. Thus they allow deeper unspeakable truths to be told - or, in this case, to ble played."

  • Having a name assigned to the player, grants players anonymity, but at the sime time an identity to explore. From page 16: "In games, we become anonymous, untethered to the roles that once enclosed us in little boxes."

  • The idea of building poetry is taken from different parts of the book. On page 23, the idea of a "supra story": "Buckles called this the 'supra-story': a story created by the reader in their imagination before they write it down or share it with others.'", "The player joins the game world but also creates it anew, imagining strange, untold stories within it." and "Games do not dictate stories to us but, like poems, speak in metaphors, images, similes, allusions, and allegory."

  • There is an Easter Egg if you stop moving for more than 5 seconds, inspired by page 45. Why I don't quote here will become self explanatory.
